Strawberries are in Season in CT!
As I was eating my Greek yogurt topped with locally picked strawberries for breakfast this morning, I decided that now strawberries are my favorite fruit, surpassing raspberries and blueberries (now mind you I might change back when these fruits are in season!). I do buy strawberries at my local grocery store year round, but nothing compares to the sweetness of a freshly picked berry this time of year. I do love to bake with them also (tonight it’s strawberry rhubarb pie at my house!) – but truly they are so sweet there’s no need to add sugar or anything to them – straight up the best! In strawberry season you will catch me at every local farm market buying quarts of them! OK so now you want to know what do strawberries have to do with the Interlaken? Well, just a short and scenic 15 minute ride from the Interlaken to the Ellsworth Hill Orchard and Berry Farm in Sharon, CT will get you fresh strawberries for your very own! You can go the freshest way by picking your own, or buying ones already picked and for sale. Ellsworth has many other fruits and vegetables as well as their picking season is just beginning. Ellsworth is open 8am to 6pm 7 days a week. So now you can add this into your “color coded weekend” getaway this weekend of fun things to do! Can’t spend the night with us? Take Dad out for some brunch at Interlaken this Sunday, Father’s Day, and then head over to Ellsworth! Check out more information on Ellsworth Farm.
Color-coded weekend away!
So you just want to get away for the weekend, you and your sweetheart, before the summer begins and school lets out. You want to: stay close to home, have a great meal, walk in the sunshine, see some water, and sleep in a comfortable bed. Well, then, the Interlaken is the place to go to this weekend! The Interlaken is just 3 hours from Boston, MA & Providence, RI, 2 hours from NYC & the eastern Connecticut Shore and less 1 1/2 hours from Albany. If you live in any of these cities or between them, we’ll keep you close to home! OK, next is your great meal: Morgan’s has you set there. Fresh, local ingredients – check out last night’s dinner special: pan-seared sustainable Baramundi with sauteed swiss chard, shrimp and plantain fritters with a sechuan orange reduction. Need I say more? Sunshine: weather.com states partly sunny with high in the low 80’s in Lakeville on Saturday – that works! Water – you know we’ve got you covered there! Lake Wononscopomuc, deepest lake in Connecticut – Interlaken’s private lakefront with cedar swings, new reclining chaises, canoes, kayaks, a paddle boat, and docks for swimming. We also have an outdoor pool, heated nicely up to 80. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, a comfortable bed - we have just a handful of Sealy King Posturepedics left this weekend, and these are located in our Sunnyside Victorian building and also our Countryside Tudor style house. Each house is private and offers clean and quiet accommodations. I’ve planned your weekend – all you have to do is call us to make your reservation! 1-800-222-2909!
Golf lessons anyone?
OK, I admit it. I am not a golfer. I have been out on the course before, perhaps you could say “playing” but I don’t have the form, or shape, or proper hold, or patience, and actually find myself quite embarassed if others are on the course behind me, waiting to “tee up”. But if you are at my low skill level, or even have a bit more and wish for improvement, there’s help for you! Our neighbor at the Hotchkiss Golf Course, Jim Kennedy, is now offering lessons every Friday and Saturday throughout the summer. The Hotchkiss Golf Course is right next door to us, so it is within walking distance from the Interlaken property and a car is not necessary. The lessons are Friday from 1pm to 4pm, and Saturdays from 10am to 2pm, and there’s no need to have or bring your own clubs. Reservations are necessary, so give Jim a call at 860-435-4400. This golf teaching is for all skill levels, so even if you think there’s no room for improvement, perhaps Jim can give you some pointers! If lessons aren’t your thing, then feel free to play a nice round of 9 holes at Hotchkiss – and if 9 holes isn’t enough for you, then go around again! Many of our groomsmen get together at Hotchkiss to “play that final round” so to speak – so wedding couples, keep that in mind!
Canoeing on Lake Wononscopomuc
Have you ever done it? It’s so relaxing, and so peaceful on the lake, it’s like a form of meditation! We grabbed a canoe and went out as the sun was setting the other evening, and there wasn’t another soul out on that lake. We canoed around the perimeter of the shores and the water was so clear that you could see the bottom. We admired some houses along the way, came across a family of moths hovering on the water, and a few fish jumping to catch the crackers we tossed in. What I loved most about the lake was how quiet it was, even with the water lapping against the canoe. If only ELLORA could have hopped in and offered her massage services – that would have been complete bliss! Let me add that this was my first time in a canoe, and it certainly won’t be my last. We supply all boats, paddles and life perserving equipment right at the lake for Interlaken Guests on a first come, first serve basis. If you are looking for a bit more of an adventure, kayaks are also available for your use!
Thousands of miles from home!
Ashley and Dan are that is, the couple that I met this morning in the lobby. I noticed this couple sitting close, looking over the Interlaken map, along with some other brochures from the area, and couldn’t help but ask if I could assist them in their plans for the day. “Oh thank you” said the young lady, and of course her accent led me to ask where they were from – “London” she replied. So then of course I had to ask her how she made her way to the Northwest Corner of Connecticut and the Interlaken! I mean seriously, this huge country and her and her sweetheart are sitting on our couch in Lakeville? I had to hear their story, and of course could listen to their wonderful accents all day long! They had attended a wedding for a friend in Chicago, and then wanted to see the sites in New York City. From there, they wanted to see some beautiful countryside, but needed something they could find off the Metro North line since they did not have a car. Ashley ”googled” some places, came across Interlaken, and made their plans to visit. Jack, a local livery service provider, was able to get them from the Wassaic Station to the Inn, and then is available if they need any other transportation over these next few days. Winston got them some breakfast from our kitchen for some energy before they decided to visit our lake, take some walks, and venture out on some local hiking trails. I can’t wait to see them tomorrow to see how their day in Connecticut went before there 2 week vacation in the US comes to a close!
Happy Hiking Full Pint, Karma & Strider!
Last week, Kevin, the General Manager of the Interlaken, was having breakfast at Toymakers Cafe (incidentally a very quaint local breakfast spot) in Falls Village, CT when he met three hikers taking a break from the Appalachian Trail. The setup of this cafe encourages diners to have conversations, so naturally Kevin and these three men started talking. It turns out, “Full Pint”, “Karma” and “Strider” were on their 89th day of hiking the Appalachian Trail (beginning in Georgia) and had 36 days left to go to the end in Maine. Three college buddies that have always wanted to hike the entire trail after reading the book “A Walk in the Woods”. Two of the three were thru-walkers, and the third was getting married in July. Kevin gave the three young gentleman a break, a chance to rest in an air conditioned room, take a long hot shower, enjoy the swimming pool and the lake before they headed back onto the Trail. Did you know that the Trail is 2178 miles long? That it takes approximately 5 million footsteps from one end to the other? That it crosses eight National Forests? I’ve highlighted some fun facts, but to hike the trail from one end to another is a feat that most people attempt but never accomplish. When you are visiting Interlaken and the surrounding area, you will certainly come upon many such hikers – maybe some are sectionals (doing the trail in sections) and some are thru-walkers, but less than 25% of people that start the trail finish it as a thru-walker. Congratulations to these three – we are sure they are going make it to their destination!
If reading this inspires you to get on the trail, there are many access points to the Appalachian Trail very close to Interlaken – click here for more information! For more local hiking in the Litchfield Hills and the Berkshires, click here! Happy Hiking!
Millbrook Wine Package = June Wedding?
es, that is right – and let me tell you about it! Back in February, a couple named Kimberley & Chris stayed at the Interlaken after making a reservation using our on-line system for the Millbrook Vineyard Tasting & Tour Package. Included in this package is dinner for two, so while dining in Morgan’s, our Food & Beverage Director and Wedding Coordinator, Brandon Scimeca, struck up a conversation with them. The conversation had many topics, but finally came down to available Spring wedding dates. With onlythe first weekend in June open, Kimberley and Chris decided to have their intimate ceremony with us lakeside followed by dinner and dancing in our Vineyard room (how appropriate given they were on the “Vineyard” package!). So Congratulations Kim & Chris on your special day this past Saturday!
Book a package with us today and you never know – one of our available October wedding dates just might be perfect for you! As the saying goes – you’ll find it when you are not looking! Click here for more informaton!
Welcome to our International Students!
Since 1947, CIEE (Council on International Educational Exchange) has been in pursuit of its mission, “to help people gain understanding, acquire knowledge, and develop skills for living in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse world.” For the past 10 years, Interlaken has hosted several International students each year. Students are able to learn about the hospitality industry as well as experiencing life in the United States. The students usually arrive to us by the end of May, just in time for our busy summer season, and stay right through October. This year we are welcoming students from the countries of Bulgaria, Macedonia, and Moldova. Four of the students are returning to us after spending time with us in previous years - they love the work environment and the beautiful hills of the Berkshires! Many make plans to see some sights in the Northeast, including trips to New York City, Boston and Niagara Falls. Please be sure to say hello to our new (and returning!) International friends!
Congratulations Maplebrook students!
Along with Interlaken having a very busy weekend, Maplebrook School in Amenia, NY has a jam-packed one as well! We are welcoming all parents and friends to the Interlaken this weekend to celebrate many events – including the prom this evening, the Golf Tournament tomorrow and then Commencement on Sunday. I met one young lady in the lobby who was so excited to “wear her pretty pink dress” to the prom – she also said she wants to come back to the Interlaken to get married here one day! I love seeing how relationships are formed over all of these years and that their memories are good ones that make them want to return. The annual Golf Tournament is being held tomorrow where all monies raised benefit the Jane Fernandez Scholarship Fund. Lastly, and certainly not least, are Commencement excercises on Sunday. Congratulations to all graduates for all of your hard work!
We are a huge supporter of Maplebrook School as we host their annual auction every October as well as a conference each February. We also love when we can provide employment opportunities for the students, as we have done so with Riley and Bill, just to name a few. They are proud to get some experience and we are proud to have them part of our culinary team!
