Kristy Barto, the Interlaken’s Sales Manager, would like to take the blog reins and share something special with you today. It’s certainly worth a listen!
Volunteerism is a healthy part of our commitment to our community at Interlaken. Our management team encourages volunteering and Interlaken gives back to our community in many different ways as a business but also as a family. Many of our staff members volunteer whether they are Little League coaches, firemen, Girl Scout Troop Leaders or helping at our local Salvation Army branch.
About a year ago country artist, Jimmy Wayne, was our guest at Interlaken while filming a webisode with Daryl Hall from “Hall & Oates” for “Live from Daryl’s House”. During his stay I had the pleasure of getting to know Jimmy and learning more about his turbulent past and his ambition to help at-risk youth across America. Jimmy was homeless as a teenager and if it wasn’t for the Costner family taking him in at the age of 16 when he was living on the streets, there’s no doubt that Jimmy Wayne wouldn’t be the successful artist he is today.
On January 1st of this year Jimmy started his journey to walk across America from Nashville to Phoenix (1700 miles) to help raise awareness for at-risk foster youth and homeless teens. During this time, he founded Project Meet Me Halfway which I’ve had the honor of volunteering for over the last several months. I wanted to share with you this special message from Jimmy Wayne and bring attention to November being “National Adoption Month” in an effort for every youth to have a place to call home.
Special Message from Jimmy Wayne:
“Elephant Ears” is a song I began writing on a flight from Nashville en route to Los Angeles. I was thinking about my sister and how she must have felt when she was a young child growing up in foster care. I remembered her being a sad little girl and very afraid, especially of grown men. The line “afraid to say I love you” was written directly from my experience observing her grow up.
My sister has no problem today saying the words “I love you,” especially since she recently adopted a 4 year old girl. That little girl gets more love than she would have ever imagined. She even favors my sister’s baby pictures.
Elephant Ears is a song for both parents and kids. It allows us to see both sides and watch a family grow. It inspires the listener to want to understand and want to help.
If someone is considering being an adoptive or foster parent, they must listen to “Elephant Ears.” This song will give them an understanding as to what the child is going through. Also every foster child should listen to the song to honor the parents who sacrificed so much to take care of them.
Please Click Here for a Free Download of “Elephant Ears”. Help us spread the word about the importance of adopting and fostering by sharing this link. Thanks for all you are doing to help these kids.
Whoopi's favorite drink
Imagine my surprise when I just heard Whoopi Goldberg announce her favorite tea is also Harney and Sons! It’s her birthday today, so The View is featuring her favorite things – and there I saw my favorite thing! She announced that Harney and Sons are the only non-Chinese to be in the Chinese Tea Hall of Fame, and also loves that their tea sachets are made of silk. What flavor am I enjoying right now as I write on the Interlaken Lakeside Blog? Nourishing Japanese Green Sencha – try a cup of Harney and Sons Fine Tea today! It will become your favorite too!
My favorite drink
I always drink when I blog. It comforts me, inspires me.
A nice hot cup of Harney & Sons Earl Grey tea. I love it.The perfect cup of Tea
Interlaken is located in the town where Harney & Sons originated back in 1983. It has been my favorite tea brand for as long as I can remember – and although they have been worldwide for quite some time, I will always remember how excited I got when I was at a very nice resort in Orlando many years ago and they served Harney & Sons tea! Because I was younger at the time, it was hard for me imagine them distributing their tea from Connecticut all the way to Florida! OK, as I said, I was young back then and didn’t get the entire picture! I get it now, and obviously so does Harney: their tea can be found at many gourmet shops and fine dining establishments all over (including Morgan’s restaurant!). Now their wonderful tea shop over in Millerton, NY will have a sister: Harney & Sons is opening a tea house in SOHO this coming Monday, November 13th. 433 Broome Street is the official address – I know I plan to stop in the next time I take a trip to NYC! If you’ve never had Harney Tea, you must come to Morgan’s restaurant at Interlaken so that we can serve you up a nice hot cup!
Getaway with your Girlfriends!
I’ve written about girlfriend getaways before, but why bore you again with my take on it! Read it from a Guest who recently stayed with us:
My family organized a “girls weekend” at Interlaken to celebrate my sister’s 50th birthday. We enjoyed the beautiful townhouse and adjoining townhouse room. Our group included a wide range of ages from 2 month old to a teenager, a college student, several shall we say baby boomers and two 82 year olds (mom and mother-in-law). Everyone was able to chill out and experience a relaxing time. Our accomodations were lovely and the staff didn’t mind that we added a few decorations to celebrate the milestone birthday! We had two hot breakfasts over the weekend in the main building which everyone enjoyed and a delicious meal at Morgan’s on Saturday night.
It was a great time to visit the area to enjoy the Fall foliage and take advantage of the crisp mornings to canoe on the lake. I want to personally thank Sue who recommended Freund’s bakery where we ordered a custom birthday cake that was absolutely delicious!
Thank you for a wonderful time and kudos to all the staff for their hospitality and high customer service. We will definitely consider returning to Interlaken in the future!
Best regards, Betty
I wrote back to Betty, thanking her for the nice letter she wrote, and also asked her if she was able to visit the local area – and here’s what she wrote:
Our group enjoyed many outings during our weekend getaway including: tour of Edith Wharton’s estate (the grounds are beautiful – although it may be a tad chilly in February), tour of the Norman Rockwell museum, a trip into Salisbury for the Fall Festival and scarecrow contest and we also drove to Norfolk on Saturday night to see Rhonda Larson at the Infinity Music Hall – very cool place, great acoustics and the Bistro/bar is a fun location to hang out after the show.
Thank you, Betty, for making it easy for all of the girlfriends out there to plan a weekend away! Pick a date and give us a call – we can work with Betty’s options or create new ones – there’s something to interest everyone in the Northwest Corner of Connecticut!

Saxon's Stay at Interlaken
Saxon, a very handsome Ariedale Terrier, stays at Interlaken quite often. This past weekend he visited us with his parents (celebrating their 20th anniversary) and attended the Little Guild Gala, celebrating their 50th anniversary. If you attended the Gala, then you may have met him as he was tending the AKC Good Canine Citizen Test booth with his owner. Let’s see what Saxon’s weekend was like at Interlaken!
On my drive into work this morning – all 48 minutes of it – I kept seeing the new Interlaken lobby wherever I looked – front yards, back yards, along the road, across the valley – and mostly – the mountains. You are probably wondering, ummm, how could that be? And another thought might be why would I spend time thinking about the lobby on my ride into work? But I couldn’t help it, and let me tell you why: the rich warm colors of this wonderful season are the colors you will find in our new lobby. These warm colors just invite you to pour a hot cup of your favorite beverage (Harney & Son’s Irish Breakfast for me), sit down next to the fireplace, just relax – and read. Take a break from the laptop (although we do have wireless access in our lobby and all Guestrooms) – and read. A paperback, a magazine, a newspaper – whatever you choose – just be sure to put something in your travel bag to read because as you enter our new lobby it will invite you to sit down and relax – and how can one refuse a nice warm invitation?
Thank you, Marie Carhart from Design Nouveau, for making our new lobby such a warm and inviting one!
Thank you, Facebook Fanners!
Just seven short days ago we asked all of our Interlaken Facebook Friends to FAN us as we opened up a new business account to provide you with more photos, more information, and more Facebook fun! We are proud to have over 130 FANS already, with the hopes that these numbers will grow each day. To kick off our new FAN page, Vanessa decided to do some special offers for those in-house Guests this past week – one of them being a little bag of local favorites (fresh apples from Ellsworth Farm being one of the items in that cute little blue bag!) – and the other being a FREE night’s stay! Both offers have currently expired – but please, stay “FANNED” both while at home and especially while you are here because you never know what Vanessa has up her Interlaken Blue Oxford Shirt – chances are it will make you smile and make your stay an even better one!
Come back and CELEBRATE at Interlaken!
I was just talking with Lizzy and Jake who got married here a couple of years ago, and are back this weekend in celebration of their wedding anniversary. What a perfect way to reminisce one of the most wonderful moments in their lives by revisiting the place where it all happened! They also visited Ellsworth Farm today and picked the last of the apple crop, stopped in Millerton for the Fall for Art event, will have a romantic dinner in Morgan’s this evening, and then head to the movies to conclude their night. One celebration happening at Interlaken!
Out on Morgan’s deck we have a couple celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends. Being married that long requires a very special sit-down luncheon, and they did just that with choice of butternut squash and ginger soup, traditional greek salad with feta, herb crusted salmon with red wine butter sauce, roasted chicken breast with rosemary lemon and grilled rib-eye, red and white wine and of course a champagne toast. What’s so neat about this couple was that just a short 25 years ago they were celerbrating their 25th wedding anniversary here at Interlaken – and here they are 25 years later celebrating with us once again. Two celebrations at Interlaken!
Another couple who stayed with us in May for the first time loved it here so much that they decided to come back tonight and celebrate their wedding anniversary with us. A romantic evening in Morgan’s is planned for them also - the third celebration at Interlaken!
Lastly, one more couple arrives later this evening for the PawPurrazzi Gala happening tomorrow in celebration of the 50th anniversary of The Little Guild. They are here to support this wonderful organization, and will also be celebrating 20 years of marriage by extending their stay a couple of nights. The fourth celebration at Interlaken!
What do you have to celebrate? Come celebrate at Interlaken – I’d love to add you to the list!
