The countryside around Interlaken is breathtaking! This shot was taken on Route 41 just a few minutes from the Interlaken property. This is just one of many views that truly capture the beauty of this area of Northwest Connecticut.

What's your secret?
To get yourself geared up for the 11th annual Trade Secrets event happening the weekend of May 14th and 15th, why not pop Mom in the car this weekend and drive up to the Northwest Corner of Connecticut and visit the many nurseries and garden centers that abound in this beautiful area! Each place I have visited already seem to be just bursting with color and life - maybe not more than usual, but maybe just more appreciated after the super long winter we just had. Have you noticed how the white and pink flowering trees are just completely covered in blooms? The Interlaken property is fortunate to have some of these beauties...
Anyway, back to those nurseries and garden centers! So, you did it, you put Mom in the car and have the entire afternoon ahead of you. First stop: Salisbury Garden Center! For those who read my blog, you are nodding and saying "no kidding"! Salisbury Garden Center takes care of the gardens at Interlaken, so it's only appropriate that I mention them first! In addition to a wonderful variety of plants, trees and shrubs, you will also find a helpful and knowledgable staff ready to get your garden growing. Now, if you want some SUGAR in addition to plants, then Freund's Farm Market and Bakery in East Canaan, CT is a must stop for you! Just 20 minutes from the Interlaken can get you a freshly baked pie to serve to Mom! So your Mom is a bit eclectic? Maybe you should visit Beardsley Gardens in Sharon, CT as their motto is "from annuals to unusuals" - you could find that unique perenniel perfect for the unique Mom you have!
I could go on and on here, as there are plenty more great places in neighboring Dutchess County, NY and up in Great Barrington, MA. The staff at Interlaken will be happy to give you more details - give us a call at 1-800-222-2909 to make your reservations this weekend - and don't forget to make reservations for either a special dinner in Morgan's Saturday night or for a yummy Sunday brunch on Mother's Day! And remember - the Trade Secrets Event to support Women's Support Services is happening next weekend - find out more about that by clicking here - enjoy a wonderful garden and antique event while supporting a worthy organization!
Region One Art Show is here!
Many things happen in the Vineyard room at the Interlaken.
On mid-week mornings you can always find our complimentary deluxe continental breakfast, being happily tended to by Erin, a new member to the Interlaken staff. On Sunday mornings you might find a private hot buffet breakfast for the newly wedded couple and their family and friends. On a Thursday evening you might find the room is set-up theater style, equipped with a podium and mic for a corporate business meeting. On a Friday night you may see a family reunion dining privately while watching a slide show of collected photos. On a Tuesday afternoon you might find a conference group partaking in the Culinary Challenge. On a Saturday afternoon you might find it set-up for a wedding ceremony for 100 people. But if you come to the Interlaken this week, you will find it set-up with the most wonderful artwork from the students in the Region One school district. It's the annual spring art show where kids from Kindergarten through 8th grade display their creative talents for all to see! Refreshments were provided Tuesday evening while many (over 300!!) proud parents and children came over and admired the paintings, clay sculptures, drawings, and paper mache animals that are now making the Vineyard room so colorful and bright this week! And remember, Morgan's Restaurant is open every night at 5:30pm - treat your creative child to a special dinner made by our creative Culinary Chefs!
A "second home" for the Kaisers
I have worked at the Interlaken for many years now, and a name that has been quite familiar to me since almost my beginning here has been Kaiser. I've seen the name "Kaiser Family Reunion" on our welcome board many times, and I've seen "Mr. & Mrs. Kaiser" in our reservation system almost every year. I got to catch up with them this visit, and wanted to share with you the Kaiser's thoughts about what they consider to be their "second home"!
First of all, they will be celebrating SIXTY years of happily wedded bliss this August (umm, how many people can say that these days?), have eight children and nineteen grandchildren. The couple began visiting the Inn about 18 years ago after reading about us in a publication. They both welcome the beautiful countryside, scenic views and rolling farmland in this area, and found the Interlaken Resort to be one of the most enjoyable places in Connecticut (that's a quote), and a perfect place for a reunion for 37 family members.
So for about a week in hot sizzling July (sometimes November), the Kaiser family would come to their "second home" for some relaxation and important family bonding time. They would occupy the entire Sunnyside house (newly renovated now, by the way!) and the first set of Townhouses. Mr. Kaiser would arrange tennis tournaments for the boys (complete with a trophy) and Mrs. Kaiser would arrange a golf outing for the girls at the Hotchkiss Golf Course right next door. Both kids and adults would enjoy the pool and our lakefront for kayaking, swimming and relaxing. On the last night of their stay with us, an old fashioned outdoor BBQ would be arranged, with a football being tossed and kids running about while the hot dogs and hamburgers were being grilled.
Today, they came in the same front entrance where they used to play "Baby Steps & Giant Steps" with grandson Brendan, and they had lunch today in the same room where they remember their little grandson Connor dancing with the band. They have so many fond family memories at Interlaken it's no wonder they have warm thoughts about us and continue to visit as much as they can! Although they wish it was easier for the entire family to come back for a get together, they realize it can be difficult and just hope it will happen again at some point.
Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Kaiser for coming for so many years and sharing your memories with me!
