Region One Art Show is here!
Many things happen in the Vineyard room at the Interlaken.
On mid-week mornings you can always find our complimentary deluxe continental breakfast, being happily tended to by Erin, a new member to the Interlaken staff. On Sunday mornings you might find a private hot buffet breakfast for the newly wedded couple and their family and friends. On a Thursday evening you might find the room is set-up theater style, equipped with a podium and mic for a corporate business meeting. On a Friday night you may see a family reunion dining privately while watching a slide show of collected photos. On a Tuesday afternoon you might find a conference group partaking in the Culinary Challenge. On a Saturday afternoon you might find it set-up for a wedding ceremony for 100 people. But if you come to the Interlaken this week, you will find it set-up with the most wonderful artwork from the students in the Region One school district. It's the annual spring art show where kids from Kindergarten through 8th grade display their creative talents for all to see! Refreshments were provided Tuesday evening while many (over 300!!) proud parents and children came over and admired the paintings, clay sculptures, drawings, and paper mache animals that are now making the Vineyard room so colorful and bright this week! And remember, Morgan's Restaurant is open every night at 5:30pm - treat your creative child to a special dinner made by our creative Culinary Chefs!
A "second home" for the Kaisers
I have worked at the Interlaken for many years now, and a name that has been quite familiar to me since almost my beginning here has been Kaiser. I've seen the name "Kaiser Family Reunion" on our welcome board many times, and I've seen "Mr. & Mrs. Kaiser" in our reservation system almost every year. I got to catch up with them this visit, and wanted to share with you the Kaiser's thoughts about what they consider to be their "second home"!
First of all, they will be celebrating SIXTY years of happily wedded bliss this August (umm, how many people can say that these days?), have eight children and nineteen grandchildren. The couple began visiting the Inn about 18 years ago after reading about us in a publication. They both welcome the beautiful countryside, scenic views and rolling farmland in this area, and found the Interlaken Resort to be one of the most enjoyable places in Connecticut (that's a quote), and a perfect place for a reunion for 37 family members.
So for about a week in hot sizzling July (sometimes November), the Kaiser family would come to their "second home" for some relaxation and important family bonding time. They would occupy the entire Sunnyside house (newly renovated now, by the way!) and the first set of Townhouses. Mr. Kaiser would arrange tennis tournaments for the boys (complete with a trophy) and Mrs. Kaiser would arrange a golf outing for the girls at the Hotchkiss Golf Course right next door. Both kids and adults would enjoy the pool and our lakefront for kayaking, swimming and relaxing. On the last night of their stay with us, an old fashioned outdoor BBQ would be arranged, with a football being tossed and kids running about while the hot dogs and hamburgers were being grilled.
Today, they came in the same front entrance where they used to play "Baby Steps & Giant Steps" with grandson Brendan, and they had lunch today in the same room where they remember their little grandson Connor dancing with the band. They have so many fond family memories at Interlaken it's no wonder they have warm thoughts about us and continue to visit as much as they can! Although they wish it was easier for the entire family to come back for a get together, they realize it can be difficult and just hope it will happen again at some point.
Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Kaiser for coming for so many years and sharing your memories with me!
A public Thank You!
Sometimes there's just one simple thing that will make your day, and I'd like to share with you what did it for me today, on this last Tuesday in April. It wasn't the extremely warm temperature in New England today, nor was it the bright sun shining down, nor was it the smathering of spring flowers popping up in the gardens around the Interlaken front entrance as I drove in this morning. It wasn't the beautiful Spring trees in bloom, nor was it the neighboring courtyard trees that are full of buds, nor the grass that is getting greener by the minute. It wasn't even my perfectly brewed cup of Irish Breakfast Harney and Sons tea! Now, although all of these things did make me happy, it wasn't until I read an email that a co-worker sent me that did it for me: a Guest chose to stay at the Interlaken because of my blog!! (this is where I would insert smiley faces if I knew how!). Of course I monitor stats and clicks and such in regards to the blog, and am happy with the numbers (thank you), but this is the first time I have ever heard the comment that Guests actually made their decision to stay here because of this blog. And, to top it all off, she had a great time! So here's my public thank you:
Sivi - THANK YOU!
Thank you for reading my blog, for choosing to stay at the Interlaken, and for making my day!!
Every day is Earth Day at Interlaken!
Still being the only hotel in the Northwest Corner of Connecticut as a certified Green Hotel, Interlaken continues on its mission to save energy, conserve water, utilize green cleaning initiatives, and practice other environmentally sound techniques. We have implemented a variety of programs to maintain this mission, and with Earth Day being just two days away, it's only appropriate to list some of those items here today:
- Recycle bins are in each Guestroom, as well as large recycling units around the property
- Installation of an ozone machine in our laundry room to guarantee that our towels and sheets achieve the whitest and safest clean technology without throwing harsh chemicals into the earth
- Our Chefs continue to add food scraps (such as from fruits and veggies) to the composting bins. The organic matter is then used in the new raised herb beds that will grace your plate in Morgan's restaurant
- New plantings from Salisbury Garden Center are low maintenance, hardy and of native varieties. The gardens around the property are populated with grasses and perenniels, and annuals that require significant water and fertilizer are limited
- The amenities in our Guestrooms come in Biodegradable bottles
- Use of green cleaning products in all Guestrooms and public areas
- All rooms have 2.0 GPM (gallons per minute) aerators on bathroom sink faucets
- Purchase at least 20% of food from local farmers (in season) for Morgan's, such as Skyfarms greens and lettuce, Fleisher organic meats, fruits and veggies from Farm Girl Farm, among many others
- Automatic light sensor shut-offs for meeting rooms and office space
- Participation in the Clean the World program, where remaining soap bars from Guestrooms are collected, recycled and redistributed to poverish countries around the globe. Read below for some words from Shawn Seipler from Clean the World:
As we recognize Earth Day with celebrations around the globe, let’s pause to realize something quite powerful. By participating in the Clean the World hospitality program, our nearly 900 hotels and bed-and-breakfast partners throughout North America have helped divert in excess of 550 tons of hotel waste from polluting local landfills.
Think about that for a moment. Without your participation in Clean the World, more than 1.1 million pounds of soap and bottled amenities would be trashed. That’s a lot of garbage and, in the truest sense of the term, a great waste of valuable resources.
By teaming with Clean the World, you’ve helped turn trash into treasure, providing soaps, shampoos, conditioners, lotions and gels for people in need. And you’ve improved sanitation conditions for communities everywhere.
Enjoy Earth Day. You have reason to celebrate because you’re helping Clean the World.

Interlaken welcomes Symphrose and Consalata!
Interlaken was honored to be chosen as a host property for a Rwandan businesswoman and her associate as part of Bpeace, a non-profit network of business professionals who volunteer time and skills with entrepreneurs in conflict-affected countries including Afghanistan, Rwanda and El Salvador. If you are aware of the genocide of 1994 in Rwanda, then hearing Symphrose's story of her survival and rebuilding of her life and dream are even more amazing. She is now the proud owner of Le Petit Prince Hotel with 25 guest rooms, a conference center, a swimming pool, and a restaurant, all sitting on beautiful landscaped grounds in the now peaceful country of Rwanda. They are here for 2 full days, gaining knowledge and sharing knowledge with Interlaken staff members about the hotel business. I loved spending time with them this morning talking about staffing issues, Guest feedback programs, and of course, social networking. It's always in apprencticeship programs like this that those that "teach" learn as well! I shared how Interlaken is now proud to be a CT Green Lodging Certified hotel, and they informed me of "Vision 2020", the country's plan for a green economy. They advised me if I should ever visit Rwanda to leave my plastic bags at home as they are not allowed at all in their country - contents included!
It was a pleasure for Interlaken to be a part of their two week learning visit to the US!
Bring home some local color!
So yesterday Salisbury Garden Center brought Interlaken the beautiful colors of Spring to its front entrance - thank you Emily from SGC! I was able to talk to Emily earlier today about the upcoming season at Interlaken (their 7th one here making our gardens look lovely!) and as usual, I am quite excited to see the lush greens and colors of the season appear once again! In addition to the beautiful hangers on the Sunnyside Porch, the ferns at the Woodside Building, the grasses at Countryside, the window boxes at the Townhouses, the huge colorful pots at the outdoor heated pool and the multitiude of color around the Wedding Pavilion, Emily and crew have other new plantings in store for us. Once summer comes, you will notice new grasses at the Woodside building, a new garden at the walkway up to the victorian Sunnyside building - and my personal favorite - a new look at the front entrance to the main building. I won't give any more details than this - you will just have to come up this summer and see for yourself!
Do you want to get some color from Salisbury Garden Center too? The store is conveniently located on Route 44 a mile east of the center of the quaint village of Salisbury, less than 10 minutes away from Interlaken property. They are open every day from 8:30am to 5pm, offering a wide selection of annuals, perennials, house plants, trees and shrubs, along with garden equipment and gifts. If you are in the mood for pansies, SGC is the place to go! Beginning this Saturday, April 16th and for many Saturdays following through June, they are offering a "Saturday Design Series" with designer Christine Krause, who will offer one-on-one consultations to make your garden be the best it can be! To get more information about this program, visit SGC's website by clicking here. I know I can't wait to get my thumb green once again this season! Visit Salisbury Garden Center to get your spring plantings started today!
Interlaken has got C O L O R !
And here's proof! Thank you Salisbury Garden Center for bringing beautiful color to our front entrance!
It's so BREEZY at Interlaken!
And I am not referring to a weather condition!
Breezy is an 8 month old Cock-a-Chon - combine a Cocker Spaniel with a Bichon Frise and wah-lah! You have cute Cock-a-Chon. Breezy has a beautiful white coat with a few patches of tan, big brown eyes and the sweetest puppy breath ever - he was full of kisses for everyone!
Super adorable, right?! And super smart too, because Breezy chose to stay at Interlaken and loved his first visit with us! Of course he chose the new and improved king-bedded room in the Victorian-styled Sunnyside building as his pet friendly accommodation. He loved his private entrance, how he could just prop himself up and look outside to see if he could spot another dog, perhaps staying over in the Woodside accommodation....
And his adoring owners loved watching him do this!
Time to bring your pet to Interlaken! We've got a total of nine pet friendly rooms - eight in Woodside with one Queen bed and one in Sunnyside with one king bed. A posh pet bed is provided for your favorite canine, along with plenty of property for walking and playing with your dog, including a nice leisurely walk to the lakefront. Winston is known to spoil pups with plenty of treats, so be sure to bring him/her in upon arrival.
If you aren't sure Interlaken is right for your pet, we have pet references! Please contact Crystal ("A Happy Guest" July 2010 blog), Saxon ("Saxon's stay at Interlaken" October 2010 blog) or Flirt (I am such a FLIRT! February 2011 blog)!
Colorful & Creative Country Quilters!
I love ‘em!
I love driving to work on these special weekends, knowing the meeting rooms are full of colorful fabrics, patterns, sewing machines, irons, batting, needles, & threads…
I love arriving to work and seeing the familiar & happy faces (this is my favorite part - always a big smile & hug from Claire!)….
I love seeing them all head upstairs to Morgan’s, knowing they will be receiving a tasty meal to overly satisfy their taste buds and give them the energy they need to get them quilting late into the night…
I love wandering between the tables and admiring their work, finding out what quilt is being made and why, and who will be the lucky one to receive it…
I love that Country Quilters loves us too!
Emailed to Kristy Barto, Corporate Sales Manager:
Another hearty “thank you” to you and Kevin and all of the gracious, friendly and efficient staff of the Interlaken Inn. It is always such a joy to spend time with all of you and this weekend was no exception. The food continues to draw rave reviews (well, except for the “nut” ladyJ), but it was truly exceptional. Everyone appreciated the menu on Saturday evening for our 50s theme of Domestic Divas and the salmon on Friday night was “lip smacking good”, as someone said. Then there was the beet salad, the stuffed mushrooms, the great soups,…
We are most grateful for all of the extra efforts you expend on our behalf and almost all of our 8 new participants have already signed up for the fall which is a good sign. They loved everything about the Inn, the staff and our event and I thank you for your part in enticing them to return. We already have 33 deposits for the fall and hope to finish with a total of 50 ladies, which would be good for the fall session. I’ll keep you posted on our progress because I know the fall is a busy season for the Inn.
Again, thank you so much, have a most enjoyable summer and we’ll look forward to seeing you in October.
It's going to happen at Interlaken
I just know it is going to happen, one of these days. Maybe not this week (as more SNOW is predicted for Friday - please let that be an April Fool's joke), but it is going to happen at Interlaken. Very soon.
The brown grass will turn green, the naked tree branches will be full of leaves, the flowers will be in full bloom.
The sun will be bright, the sky will be blue, the air will be warm.
The pool will be full of crystal clear water, ready for the perfect swim.
There will be a bride and her bridesmaids, walking to the lakefront for a lakeside ceremony.
Someone will be enjoying their private lakefront area on Lake Wononkapook while staying in our cozy lakeside cottage.
The swings at the lakefront will have Guests celebrating their 20 year wedding anniversary swaying on them.
The wedding pavilion will be hosting an evening reception for a happy couple and their Guests, complete with its sides off, surrounded by lush green gardens.
There will be a corporate group experiencing raft building, one of our many team building exercises.
The new tennis courts will have an early morning match played by a couple on the Millbrook Vineyard Package.
Their will be a dog swimming in the lake.
I know that all this will happen at Interlaken very soon!
